Our Fire Extinguisher Training Course is delivered by experienced, operational firefighters and designed to give staff the confidence, knowledge, and practical skills needed to use fire extinguishers safely and effectively in an emergency.
The course begins with a concise theory session covering the different classes of fire, extinguisher types, and most importantly when not to use an extinguisher. Strong emphasis is placed on personal safety, understanding limitations, and making an informed risk assessment rather than encouraging unnecessary intervention.
Where suitable space is available, the training also includes a live fire practical exercise. This allows learners to gain hands-on experience using real extinguishers in a controlled environment. Practical sessions typically require an outdoor area equivalent to approximately three car parking spaces, clear of flammable materials and gas supplies.
This balanced approach ensures staff understand both the theory and the reality of extinguisher use, while reinforcing that evacuation is always the priority when conditions are unsafe.

The first part of the course covers the key legal duties, fire safety legislation, classes of fire, and the different types of fire extinguishers. Learners will understand which extinguishers are suitable for different fire risks, when they should and should not be used, and how to make safer decisions in an emergency.

Before the practical session begins, the trainer will complete a risk assessment to ensure the area is safe and suitable. Where appropriate space is available, learners will then have the opportunity to operate real fire extinguishers on a controlled live fire, helping them build confidence and understand how to use extinguishers safely in an emergency.

Following completion of the course, certificates will be emailed directly to the booking contact. These should be retained as evidence that staff have received fire extinguisher training, helping support your record keeping and compliance with fire safety legislation, including the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and PUWER requirements.
